Luke Haugen-Strand was born in Sherwood Park Alberta and spent his early years in Chilliwack BC, Duluth Minnesota, Ottawa Ontario, and Thunder Bay, Ontario. He moved to Sackville at the age of 11. He enjoys the cultural opportunities offered here in the Maritimes and the close proximity to nature.
Luke Haugen-Strand has been involved in the arts all his life. Upon arriving in Sackville, he became involved in theatre, participating many plays. Since he was a child, he has enjoyed writing and won 2nd Place, Sheree Fitch Prize for Writer’s Federation of NB. At the age of 20, he found his real passion in oil painting, and specializes in portraits, landscapes and creative still life’s.
He has taken private lessons in sculpture, drawing and painting and has participated in restoration work on mezzo relief panels in Hamilton, Ontario, and centennial monuments in Dunnville, Ontario. With works collected at the Canadian Centre for the Great War, and the Molly Kool Centre.
Luke has been commissioned to do many paintings including: three large paintings for the Eco play “Bearing Witness” by Elizabeth Glenn-Copeland, an advent series for Sackville United Church, a Buckminster Fuller inspired piece for Quantam Healing workshops held in both Canada and France.
Most recently Luke was artist in residence for Kairos where he created a series on ecological justice.
