The Province of NS’s Department of Natural Resources and Renewables has launched a project called the Nova Scotia Community Solar Program. The program is designed to encourage community and non-profit groups, such as the Anglican Churches in NS, to develop solar power production facilities to augment the NSPI power grid over 25 years.
These community-based projects must have at least 500 KW of power which represents approximately 1200 high wattage commercial solar panels. Such a size is impossible for most houses of worship and non-profit groups to even imagine developing.
St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Middle Sackville NS, has been 100% powered by a 104 panel solar garden since October 2021 using a method called Net Metering. As a Parish we believe solar production is a viable, dependable, green energy option worth considering.
The Parish is now doing research into the NS Community Solar Garden project idea, outlined above, as a possible 25 year reliable source of income for our Parish which could help us expand our good works and support an even greater green economy.
We are currently in discussions with a Community Solar Garden project company called the Love Solar Garden project in Upper Hammonds Plains, HRM. Love Solar Garden is being developed to be ‘subscribed’ to by charitable faith groups and non-profits and structured in a manner not to impact our non-profit tax status. Subscribing will be based on lots of 25 solar panels. The Love Solar Garden project can host up to 3000 panels that can be subscribed to by a wide range of Houses of Worship and Non-Profits throughout Nova Scotia.
If your Church/Parish is at all interested in being involved in such a green energy project, please contact Al Darrach at al@agdarrach.com phone 902-483-9258 or Bruce Moxley
Please let Al Darrach above or I know if you are interested in a ZOOM information session to learn more. If there is enough interest, we will announce dates and times.
