Every week someone from a local parish in our Diocese reaches out to the Synod Office staff to inquire about the future of their church buildings. These lovely sacred spaces are usually in good shape and are located centrally in the community. Leaders are wondering how their church structures can be reimagined to better serve their neighbours and be utilized in a way that ensures their upkeep (and expenses are covered).
Here's one idea from an Anglican church in Michigan. Other congregations have also considered hosting cafes', children's inside play areas, studio space for artists, and a variety of social enterprises. As you read this article, consider how your building could be graciously shared with the wider community and also build relationships with the congregation.
